Denise Joyal is the Adjunct Professor of Ceramics at Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA. Her work focuses on functional and sculptural stoneware and porcelain forms inspired by Neolithic Irish stone constructs, the interplay of directional light and shadow, surface planes and illustration. A passion for atmospheric firing allows for subtle variations that continue to be a source of inspiration. The work relies upon the chemical reactions between naturally occurring oxides found in clay and slips reacting with the kiln atmosphere. The addition of sodium compounds to the firing creates the surface effects on the ware. The final results offer a sense of directional lighting emphasized by shape of the forms and the surface decoration. Ms. Joyal currently fires the majority of her work in a propane-fired soda kiln and shared wood firings.
Ms. Joyal graduated from Washington College in Chestertown, MD with a Bachelor’s degree in Art. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Ceramic Arts, and her Master’s Certificate in Ceramic Arts from Hood College in Frederick, MD.
